Principal Backend Systems Engineer

Doug Anarino is a product-focused engineer with 30+ years of experience building web systems, often as the first or founding engineer. He has scaled consumer platforms to tens of millions of users, built multilingual messaging systems, scaled event ingestion, and worked on real-time pipelines and ML-based recommendation systems. Recently, he has been building a SaaS platform around an open-source, browser-based video editor and encoding API, utilizing TypeScript across Node and Deno (Lambda containers, Supabase Edge Functions), and distributed media pipelines using FFmpeg and AWS (API Gateway, ECS, SQS). He focuses on client-side processing, network constraints, and rendering at scale. He excels in small teams, owning systems end-to-end from architecture through operating and debugging in production, partnering closely with founders. He is open to contract or part-time work immediately and is looking for founding or early-stage roles, particularly in backend/infrastructure-heavy work, media, messaging, or high-throughput systems. He is not interested in crypto, fintech, medical, or primarily AI-focused roles.
